One of the requests of Facebook Messenger users over the past years from Facebook has been to allow them to disable the self-view window during a call. There is even a question with the same subject posted on the Facebook portal, which has received dozens of comments in favor. But so far, no response has been received from Facebook. So, we decided to look into this problem and see if there is a solution.
It can be said that this problem exists in almost all video calling apps. Especially apps provided by Facebook. Like Messenger and WhatsApp. When you make a video call to another person, you see your thumbnail at the bottom of the screen. For those users who want to dedicate more screen space to see the other person, displaying their own image seems a bit ridiculous. This is why many want to close this self-view window. But for now, the option available is to disable it.
How to disable self-view during a call?
To do this, whether on Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, just click the camera button. This button is located at the bottom of the screen next to the mute and end call buttons when you are calling. Clicking on this camera icon actually blocks your image, and that self-view window shows just black space. But can this black rectangle also be removed to have the screen completely? Unfortunately, no. Or at least until now (2021), such a feature has not been considered for these messengers.

However, if you want, you can use other apps such as Skype for video calling. The good feature of this app is that you can double-tap the screen during a video call, either individually or in groups, to hide all the on-screen elements. This means that the self-view is hidden from your screen, but the other party can still see you.
